Why Is Your Water-Activated Tape Peeling? Pro Tips for a Permanent Seal

Water-activated tape (WAT) is widely recognized as the "Gold Standard" for secure, eco-friendly carton sealing. Unlike standard plastic tape, WAT creates a molecular bond with the corrugated fibers. However, operators sometimes encounter the frustrating issue of "tape lifting" or "peeling" at the edges.

If your tape isn't sticking as it should, the problem usually lies in the application process. Here are the professional steps to ensure your LockedPaper system delivers a perfect seal every time.

1. Master the "Moistening" Balance

The most common cause of peeling is uneven wetting. If the tape is too dry, the adhesive won't activate; if it’s too wet, the glue takes too long to set.

  • Check Your Brushes: Ensure the brushes in your EG100 Electric Dispenser are clean and not "crusted" with dried glue. We recommend washing the brushes weekly in warm, soapy water.

  • Water Level is Key: The EG100 features a massive 2.1L water bottle. Ensure it is properly seated to maintain consistent water flow to the brush tank.

2. Optimize Water Temperature

In colder warehouse environments, the adhesive on kraft tape can become "stubborn."

  • The Warm Water Advantage: Using lukewarm water in the dispenser can accelerate the activation of the starch-based adhesive.

  • Consistent Flow: High-quality dispensers like the EG100 are designed to moisten the tape evenly at speeds of up to 1.1m/s, ensuring the entire surface is ready for bonding.

3. The Five-Second Rule and Rub-Down Technique

Unlike pressure-sensitive tape, WAT needs a moment to "bond."

  • The Wipe-Down: Once the tape is applied, use your hands to firmly rub the tape across the top and down the sides of the carton. This pressure forces the moistened adhesive into the paper fibers.

  • Avoid Over-Stretching: Do not pull the tape too tight during application. Paper naturally expands when wet and shrinks as it dries; over-stretching can lead to the ends pulling away or "curling."

4.Store Your Tape Correctly

The environment before the tape reaches the machine matters.

Humidity Control: Store your LockedPaper Kraft Tape rolls in a cool, dry place. Extreme humidity can partially activate the adhesive on the roll, leading to poor performance once it goes through the dispenser.

Choosing the Right Tool for the Job

Efficiency depends on the volume of your operations:

For High-Volume Lines: The EG100 Electric Dispenser is built for industrial class performance, featuring a durable stainless steel structure and a specialized blade for clean cuts every time.
